I actually find the whole “stop resorting to comparing us to Nazi Germany” argument pretty weak. Yeah yelling “this is just like Nazi germany” is not helpful but drawing comparisons just shows how parallels are happening today in an age where we SHOULD be using Nazi Germany as a standard of what not to do.

I get what you’re saying, but much of American history is much worse than the current situation and we never became Nazi Germany. We literally put a whole group of people in camps, based solely on their nationality, while fighting the Nazis. And of course we have the whole original sin of the US. This administration has accidentally deported one man. I mean that is absolutely terrible, it’s horrible. But it’s not even close to as bad as what we’ve done in our own history. People can constantly take things to the nth degree, and you’re right, we shouldn’t be like Nazi Germany, but that seems incredibly unlikely, right? Like it’s certainly possible Trump invades Canada or Greenland, but his coalition is built from people who are against forever wars so that seems unlikely. And maybe he’ll send every Latino to El Salvador, but more likely he’s just going to deport a lot of illegal immigrants without due process. He may try to run for a third term, but I don’t see how he possibly could. Basically all of the abuses of power he’s used have been existing powers that the President had and were kept in check by “norms.” So like yeah, we don’t want to be like Nazi Germany, but the chances of that seem slim so why don’t we just argue about why what’s happening now is bad without extrapolating incredibly terrible but slim possibilities? Because calling people Nazis and fascists automatically excludes them from the pool of people you could persuade.

Sorry for the paragraph. Appreciate you commenting. And reading for that matter. You inspire me.
